The BASI Level 1 Instructor Course is the first instructor qualification within the BASI pathway of training and grading. It is the initial step on the route to eventually becoming an internationally recognised Snowsport instructor. The course aims to provide you with the basic information and skills needed to develop your practical performance before returning for the BASI Level 2 Instructor Course.
Training will primarily take place on snow and be supplemented with online learning tutorials, and video reviews. This 4 day course aims to provide you with the essential information and skills needed to develop your practical performance in the Central Theme, piste performance, and teaching principles.
Your personal contribution will be an important aspect of the course. We want you to enjoy the course, learn the fundamentals, and have a great time. While we don't need you to be superhuman athletes, it's really important you prepare youself for the course both physically and mentally, as you will be spending 6 hours a day on snow. The mental demands of this course should not be a concern, but will require your ability to concentrate and participate.

Skiing Standard
- Ski parallel turns confidently, in a variety of conditions.
- Ski parallel on red runs, making rhythmical short turns at a steady pace.
- Ski parallel long turns on green or easy blue slopes, with skis carving the last two thrids of the turn.
- It is recommend you have completed at least 16 full weeks of skiing.
- Have an understanding of client care.
Holders of the Snowsport Scotland ASSI/ASBI qualifications can apply for exemption from this course to go directly to the BASI Level 2 Instructor Course (requires a letter to apply for exemption).
What will the course develop:
- Understanding of the role of the Snowsport Instructor.
- Practical performance in the BASI Central Theme, piste performance, and the teaching principles.
- Leadership, people management, communication, customer care, and safety skills.
- Awareness of the sturcture in the UK and internationally, and other relevant organisations.
A qualified ICE BASI trainer, selected for their skills in skiing, teaching, and communication, will run your course. Your trainer will continually assess you and provide an end of course assessment of your personal performance.
Course Delivery
Training will primarily take place on snow, supplemented with online learning tutorials, and video reviews. Throughout the 4 days, your trainer will continually assess your progress. The daily programme usually includes six hours on snow and one hour of self-study.
Upon completion of the BASI Level 1 Instructor Course, you will be registered as an associate member on the BASI database. To keep your qualification active, you must pay your membership fee annually via the BASI website.
Post Course Qualification
Successful completion of this course qualifies you as a BASI Level 1 Instructor. You will be trained in the basic skills, knowledge, and understanding of a snowsports instructor. You will receive a license to teach snowsports in a non-mountain environment, such as a UK dry slope or indoor snow slopes.
To obtain your BASI Level 1 Instructor qualification, you need to provide BASI with proof of 35hrs logged ski school experience (post course), a First Aid certificate, and a child protection module.
Equipment and Clothing Recommendations
What should I wear on the course?:
- Use a layered clothing concept for versatility in various temperatures.
- A breathable, waterproof outer layer is preferred.
- Bring sufficient layers to cope with different temperatures.
- Snowsport equipment and boots should be high quality. Boots should balance comfort and performance.
